As is tradition, this year’s Synergy day on May 17th brought smiles to everyone’s face. Presentations, followed by an outdoor grill and refreshments, were great opportunities for everyone involved with AMPEL to socialize and get to know each other’s research.
Over 34 abstracts were submitted as poster presentations and “Rapid Fire Research” talks, with the best abstracts judged to be:
Best “Rapid Fire Research” Talk: Nicolas Romualdi, “Grain Growth in the Weld Heat Affected Zone of Line Pipe Steels”
Best Poster Presentation: “Multiphoton Microscopy using Er-doped Fiber Laser” by Lin Huang, Mukhlasur Rahman Tanvir, and Qihao Liu.
One of the Synergy Day highlights was a presentation by Dr. Elicia Maines, the Director of the Invention to Innovation graduate program at the Beedie School/ SFU. Based on her 2016 Nature Materials paper, Professor Maines described the benefits of emerging materials, the hurdles in commercialization (giving examples in nanomaterials, polymers and composites), and ways to accelerate the innovation process (from the current 5 – 15 years once they leave the university).
Thanks to everyone who participated and shared your research – we look forward to seeing you next year at Synergy Day.
